Review: The Lois Ann in San Diego

“People come from far, far, far away to find their dreams, chasin’ down these meteors and comets called dreams, in the sky of life. There are certain hot spots where these meteors and stars have a tendency to fall; and legend has it that California is one of those spots. I believe that to be true…”           – Mos Def

It isn’t often that I quote hip-hop artists, but I feel that Mr. Def’s lyrics in this case happens to dead on correct in my opinion. Especially when concerning San Diego and the Channel Islands of Coastal California. In this particular post I would like to focus on one particular dive operation. The Lois Ann out of San Diego California. I recently ventured into the “Promised Land of Milk and Honey”, in search of beaches and diving. I traveled with a group of friends and quickly rediscovered why I love Southern California so much. We toured the USS Midway museum, and had fish tacos on Shelter Island the day before our diving. We were set for afternoon dives. The Lois Ann calls SeaForth Sport Fishing her home, the place may be confusing. It confused me, I was not expecting to see a dive boat in the middle of the whale watching and sea sport fishing boats that call this place home berth.

She’s docked at the end on the pier, a long walk with gear; but there is a cart at the boat that will help. I would recommend that you take as little as possible to the boat, she’s not a big boat but she is comfortable for non-gear nerds in a group. So if you’re a gear nerd and you’re in a group I would recommend trying to self-evelaute what you need and what you don’t. I was on the boat with 13 others, and we all fit very comfortably on the deck (she can comfortably take 20). The ride out to the Yukon is only about 2 miles from shore (15-20 minutes from the dock), so you don’t need excessive long term gear. There is a compressor on board so they can refill you after each dive. I saw a few who had brought their own doubles the second morning; so you can bring your own, but the tanks on boards are just fine as well. They have the capability of fresh water on board. They also have weights. The charter itself is well worth the money. Book ahead so they know you’re coming. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgable; about diving and the area. Beyond the normal dive operations friendliness these guys exude customer service to a level not normally seen on dive operations. They’re very friendly to technical divers and recreational divers alike. They feed and water you and they even have soda on board as well. All in all, there is nothing bad I can say about the Lois Ann. In fact, I would recommend the boat to anyone hands down over any other operation in the San Diego area. If you’re planning on diving in San Diego and are looking for a boat charter, don’t risk the possibility of a bad or mediocre experience with another charter: guarantee a fun and great experience with the Lois Ann. I will still post about other charters on here of course; GoScubaCandy will always post new reviews on dive operations, shoppes, and charters; but personally I will not go to any other boat ever again in San Diego when I’m diving for myself. I am sold, which is normally very tough for a business to do for me.
